My name is Katy Doty and I am excited to introduce myself as the Lead Teacher for the Two’s at AEDS. I have had the pleasure of teaching at Ascension since the summer of 2012 and I have been teaching preschool since 1998. I can tell you whole-heartedly that my passion is teaching.
I am a native of Norfolk and graduated from Norfolk Collegiate. I obtained my Early Childhood Associate Degree from TCC with highest honors. I attended Longwood University for Art Education and I am finishing my bachelor’s and master’s degree in Elementary Education at old Dominion University. In my spare time I can be found around Hampton Roads enjoying life with my daughter and family.
Hello, my name is Mrs. Portia. I am excited to be the new Acting Lead Teacher for the Pre-K 4/5 classroom. I have worked at Ascension Day School since the opening in 2009. I attended Shaw University in North Carolina and have over 15 years experience teaching children. In my spare time I enjoy watching films and spending time with my husband. I am so looking forward to working with and teaching your children.
I am a graduate of Regent University. I have a BS in Psychology, and I am finishing up MA of Human Services with a Concentration in Student Affairs. I consider myself a life-long learner, and eager to gain more knowledge. Furthermore, I have always had a heart for children, especially this age, because it’s all about developmental milestones, and ultimately the basic tools children need as they move on to Pre-K4 and kindergarten. It is at this age we can see their personality burst and experience growth physically, emotionally, socially, cognitively and verbally. I am blessed to be able to work here, providing a safe, calming, and loving environment for your children.

I received my BA from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1985. I have been working as an educator since 1986 when I started tutoring English as a Second Language in Berkeley, California to elementary school students from Asian countries. The following year, I also began teaching preschool at a large, diverse center in Berkeley called the Child Education Center. In the intervening years I tutored high school and college chemistry and biology, substitute taught in grades pre K-12, worked as a teacher assistant in a junior high school in Berkeley, and worked as a naturalist for the Episcopal Diocese of Vermont and their adjoining high school. In addition, I was a stay-at-home dad for my two children and a nanny for my niece. I have enjoyed it all, but I am most proud professionally of my ten years teaching at Evergreen Preschool in Vergennes, Vermont, a school which is accredited at the highest national standards for early education
My husband and I moved here from California in 2011 to be able to watch our 3 granddaughters grow up, which happens way too fast! I have over 20 years’ experience in bookkeeping and payroll. Working in the office at Ascension has been a wonderful, new learning adventure. I am able to use my organizational, crafty and life skills to assist with helping the DaySchool run as smoothly as possible. Every day there is something new. And the bonus is that I get to love on the children. In my free time I like to read, garden, sew and raise Black Swallowtail butterflies.
